Lot Essay

The design of the legs with their unsual tapering collars and shaped feet relate to an early drawing executed by court architect William Chambers during his tour throughout France and Italy from 1749-1755 (illustrated in J. Harris, 'Early neo-classical furniture', Furniture History, 1966, pl. XIIIA).

These window benches once formed part of the collection of The Honorable C. Douglas Dillon (b. 1909) who was secretary of the Treasury under John F. Kennedy.
