Lot Essay

The sconces are designed in the George II 'picturesque' fashion with their foliate branch candle-vases issuing from water-dripped 'grotto' brackets and reflected in glass, whose frames of voluted and water-dripped temple pediments are supported by rustic pilasters and scrolls of Roman acanthus. Their pattern derives from the 'Chippendale' girandoles at Corsham Court, Wiltshire popularized by Oliver Brackett's Thomas Chippendale, 1925, pl. 42.
