Lot Essay

The present vases were inspired by a Meissen model, part of a set of four 'Elements' vases produced in two sizes. See F. Severne McKenna, Chelsea Porcelain, The Gold Anchor Wares, 1952, plate 22, fig. 41; Elizabeth Adams, Chelsea Porcelain, London, 1987, p. 114, fig. 94; and Property from the Collection of Mrs. Charles Wrightsman, Sotheby Parke Bernet, 5 May 1984, lots 94 and 95 for somewhat earlier Chelsea examples. Also see Dr. Karl Berling, Das Meissener Porzellan, illus. opposite p. 108 for a set of Meissen baskets emblematic of the four Elements.
