A CYCLADIC(?) CALCITIC MARBLE CUP
POSSIBLY EARLY CYCLADIC II, CIRCA 2600-2400 B.C. OR LATER
Fragmentary, of conical form on small circular base, with thin translucent walls, 3 in. (7.6 cm.) high; a Greek pottery lydion, the tapered body and neck with black glaze, a band of 'S' shaped motifs around the shoulder, similar on the flat rim with dotted crosses, 3½ in. (9 cm.) high; and a Greek pottery unguentarium, with slender elongated foot and neck, decorated with dark brown bands, 5 in. (12.7 cm.) high, both circa 6th Century B.C. (3)
Provenance
Collection of Dr. R. Schmidt (1900-1970), and thence by descent to the present owner (see lot 28 onwards). Item one: acquired on the European art market, 1960.
