Lot Essay

There is censor's seal although this was published in 1843 and should have been subject to censorship. It was probably this print which caused Kuniyoshi to be hauled up before the authorities and severely reprimanded as the design was deemed to be a satire on the inertia of the Tokugawa Shogun Ieyoshi (the sleeping figure of Yorimitsu) and his unpopular chief minister Mizuno Nichizen (the seated guard closest to Yorimitsu)
