Lot Essay

The Hellenistic marble original was discovered in Rome, refered to in a 1556 city guide. By 1568 it moved to Florence and in 1591 housed in the Uffizi, as a gift from Pope Pius IV to Cosimo I de'Medici. A bronze copy was made by Pietro Tacca in the 1630s and Antonio Susini produced smaller versions. It has always remained a popular Grand Tour image, reproduced throughout the 18th and 19th centuries.
