On short foot, the white ground of the sides with two panels of elegant sepia kufic inscription each within an lobed band along the rim, the centre with small irregular circle, the exterior plain, repaired breaks and minimal restoration

Lot Essay

The inscription reads: al-mulk li'llah, (Sovreignty belongs to God).

A number of conical bowls with the same inscription in similar calligraphy were excavated at Nishapur (see for example Charles K. Wilkinson, Nishapur Pottery of the Early Islamic Period, New York, 1974, pl.22, pp.99 and 117).
