Manuscript on cream paper, 233ff. plus 1 fly-leaf, each with 18ll. of clear black naskh in clouds reserved against gold ground, gold, red and blue verse markers, sura headings in gold thuluth on illuminated ground, all within gold margins, illuminated marginal juz' markers, illuminated cartouches of marginal notes on many pages in nasta'liq in clouds reserved on gold ground, double-page opening illumination with polychrome and gold, colophon dated Jumada al-'Awwal 12[2]0 or 12[3]0 and signed ibn Muhammad 'Ali Muhammad Taqi al-Sharif, contemporary lacquer binding with central medallion and spandrels containing polychrome floral motifs with gold floral borders

Lot Essay

Muhammad Taqi al-Sharif Ibn Muhammad 'Ali could be one of two scribes. The first is a naskh scribe, Muhammad Taqi ibn Muhammad 'Ali Borujerdi, who copied a Qur'an in AH 1225/1810-11 AD and a calligraphic page in AH 1238/1822-23 AD. The second is another naskh scribe with the name Muhammad Taqi ibn Muhammad 'Ali who copied a Qur'an to present to Nasir al-Din Shah in AH1268/1851-52 (Mehdi Bayani, Ahval va Asar-e Khosh-Nevisan, Vol. IV, Teheran, 1358 sh., pp. 143-4).

A Qur'an dated 1805 AD and copied by a 'Ibn Muhammad 'Ali Muhammd Taqi' was sold in Sotheby's, 15 April 1985, lot 274.
