The astronomical tables prepared for Hulegu, Persian manuscript on buff paper, 216ff. plus one fly-leaf, the first few pages with 27ll. of black nasta'liq with important words picked out in red and inserted tables, the margins of double red rules, the latter section of the manuscript composed primarily of tables in blue, red and black with titles in larger script, the fly-leaf with many owners inscriptions, and the margins with numerous notes, areas of water staining and minor repairs, original brown morocco with repaired edges

Lot Essay

Muhammad ibn Muhammad ibn al-Hasan Nasir al-Din al-Tusi was born in Tus in AH 597/1201 AD and died AH 672/1274 AD in Baghdad. He was the most eminent scholar of the medieval world in trigonometry and wrote on a wide range of topics within the areas of mathematics and astronomy as well as on logic and theology. He is well-known as the founder of the observatory at Maragha in AH 1259 for the Ilkhanid ruler Hülegü.

Completed in 1272, the Zij-i Ilkhani contains tables for calculating the positions of the planets and the names of stars, derived from the observations of 12 years at the observatory at Maragha.
