PROBABLY NORTH INDIA, 18TH CENTURY
In the form of a mango, the rounded body in two joined halves each carved with four flowerheads around a central cartouche filled with floral motifs, a cypress tree motif below, part medallions and arabesques at each side, a reciprocal border running along the join, the silver and niello mount at mouth with screw-threaded stopper with hinged loop handle

Lot Essay

A flask of very similar workmanship carved from a small coconut was sold in these Rooms 4 April 2006, lot 200. Two further similar examples, carved as here from small gourds, one with a small gold stopper, were included at Sotheby's London, 12 October 2005, lots 81 and 82 (catalogued as Persian 16th century).
