The collection focuses on the Deccan, with examples from further north and also, notably, from the South. It is extremely rare to see such a group of jewellery from this part of India together. The collection varies from the very traditional Indian jewellery such as the navaratna set pendant to the more clearly foreign influenced double-headed eagle pendants from Mysore. It also demonstrates a great variety of materials and techniques, clearly showing the virtuosity of the Indian goldsmiths and jewellers.

Lot Essay

The exquisite enamelling on the back of this pendant is similar in terms of colour and technique to that on an enamelled gold dagger sold in these Rooms 12 October 2004, lot 65. The note to that lot clearly indicated a Hyderabad provenance, which similarly seems most probable for the present example. Similar but less delicate enamelling is also seen on another pendant (Hans Weihreter, Blumen des paradieses, Die Fürstenschmuck nordindiens, Graz, 1997, no.40, pp.141 and 178).
