A GEMSET DOUBLE-SIDED OCTAGONAL PENDANT
PROBABLY DECCAN, 18TH CENTURY
Of octagonal form, with upper floral suspension loop and lower pendant pearl, the face with a central ruby flanked by the other eight stones of a navaratna series, the ruby enclosed within a green border, all on an engraved gold ground, the reverse with a lattice of turquoises flanked by ruby and turquoise floral motifs

Lot Essay

The navaratna comprise nine stones which represent the nine planets of the Indian astrological system and frequently appear in Indian jewellery (Momin Latif, Mughal Jewels, exhibition catalogue, Brussels, 1982, p.43 and no.16, p.159).
