The inscription that appears on both sides of the pendant reads al-mulk li'llah, 'Sovreignty is God's'.
A pendant of similar form was sold in these Rooms, April 11 2000, lot 311. A further example, but made of silver, is in the L. A. Mayer Memorial Museum, attributed to "Egypt or Iran, 10th-12th century" (Rachel Hasson, Early Islamic Jewelry, Jerusalem, 1987, no.118, p.118).
