Lot Essay

A cult-status dance performer and teacher, who studied with Marcel Marceau in the 1950s before starting his own company in 1968, Kemp has crept into mainstream awareness through association with his former pupils, David Bowie and Kate Bush. His performances are a strange mix of mime, Kabuki, and oddball British comedy. He also made an appearance in Derek Jarman's film Sebastiane (1976).
