A satsuma bowl, signed Shizan, Meiji Period (1868-1912)
painted and gilt to the exterior with book, oval, concertina and quatrefoil formed cartouches depicting scenes of sparrow headed figures entertaining an elderly couple, a gathering of six seated gentlemen, and scenes of flowering peony with cherry blossoms, and pavilions in riverside landscapes, all upon a scattered flowerhead ground, the interior delicately painted with six rows of flower culsters swirling upwards towards the rim, gilt seal reading Shizan sei to base - 4 7/8in. (12.5cm.) diam.
