Basel: Michael Isingrin, 1555. 2° (316 x 206mm). a2r and a3r within different woodcut borders, woodcut device on title and last page (same pages a little dustsoiled). 17th-century mottled calf (rebacked, corners repaired). Provenance: 2 16th-century ownership inscriptions at foot of title (both deleted) - Earl of Essex, 1701 (armorial bookplate on title-verso). Third edition, but the first to contain Book 27. Adams V448.
BUCHANAN, George (1506-1582). Rerum Scoticarum historia. Edinburgh: Alexander Arbuthnot, 1582. 2° (285 x 197mm). Title within a typographical border and with large device, another version on verso of f.4 and on recto of the last errata leaf (ownership inscription excised from head of title and restored, last leaf mounted, a little browning). Early 19th-century calf by Alexander Banks junior of Edinburgh with his ticket (rebacked). Provenance: a few contemporary marginalia - G. Dyer (late 18th-century signature at head of title) - J.N. Burton (19th-century signature on an endpaper) - G.W. Prothero (bookplate) - P.H. Brown (a gift from Prothero and returned to him after Brown's death, inscription on an endpaper). FIRST EDITION.
