A SET OF SIX DRAWINGS DEDICATED TO THE ASPREY WORLD SERIES DOUBLE RIFLE COLLECTION BY KEITH SPIBEY Circa 1980
A folio of very fine presentation artwork, exquisite in its detail, by the late Keith Spibey, a celebrated engraver, and commissioned from him by Bernard Horton-Corcoran of B.J. Horton Gunmakers. Produced in the early 1980s the designs formed the basis for the final engraving of the outstanding garniture of weapons known as The World Series of Double Rifles manufactured by B.J. Horton Gunmakers for Asprey (London). The actual engraving of these magnificent rifles was executed by the internationally renowned Gianfranco Pedersoli.
Keith Spibey enjoyed a considerable reputation for his skill with fine gold inlay work as well as scroll and picture engraving. He did work for B.J. Horton Gunmakers over a period of twenty years on high class guns and rifles built for, amongst others, an American President, a number of Heads of State and members of Eastern royal families. He was also regularly engaged to do work for the leading British gunmakers.
Each sheet within the folio shows the intended designs for the engraving on the various parts of each rifle, the designs governed by the nature of the continent the rifle represents. Thus the designs for the Africa rifle show Lion, Elephant, Leopard, Rinoceros, Buffalo and Dinka warriors. Similarly the designs for the other rifles, namely Asia, North America, South America, Australia and Europe depict appropriate animals, scenes and people from the given continent on the actions and furniture of the weapon.
