PENFOLDS GRANGE
"The Grange" is the name of a small cottage in a vineyard at Magill on the slopes overlooking the city of Adelaide, where, in 1844, Dr Rawson Penfold settled to make wine for 'his patients' health'. Born in 1811, he studied medicine in London. Before he left Britain he had obtained vine cuttings from the south of France and these were planted around the site of the modest stone cottage he built with his wife, Mary, in 1845.
The first vintage of Penfolds Grange was made on an experimental basis in 1951 by winemaker Max Schubert, The first vintage to be commercially released was the 1952. A century later 'Penfolds Grange Hermitage Claret', would become the single most renowned wine in Australia.
Grange is made from grapes harvested over a wide area. This means that the precise composition of the wine will change from year to year and it is the branding and expertise of the winemaking which purchasers value. The quantity of Penfolds Grange produced varies considerably from year to year and is a carefully guarded secret.
