Lot Essay

The screw schooner Sayonara was the last in a line of steam yachts owned by A.J. Drexel, the immensely wealthy Philadelphia banker who was a close associate of J.P. Morgan. Designed and built by Robert Steele at Greenock in 1880, she had already carried four different names before Drexel purchased her in 1911 and renamed her Sayonara. Registered at 480 tons gross (581 Thames), Drexel used her for four years until she was hired by the British Admiralty as an armed auxiliary patrol yacht in 1915. Released at the end of 1918, she appears to have been scrapped soon afterwards.
