8° (234 x 145mm). 2 folding engraved maps, 4 wood-engraved illustrations. (Preliminaries spotted, the larger map spotted and with marginal tear.) Original brownish purple ribbed cloth decorated in blind, spine gilt lettered, uncut (unevenly sunfaded, spine rubbed at extremities, with small tear below title and tiny ink mark near foot, splits to front inner hinges). Provenance: Thomas Mainwaring Bulkeley Owen, Nov 15 1839 ('the gift of his Father', inscription on front free endpaper).
FIRST EDITION, second issue of Darwin's first published book, written up from his manuscript journal and the small notebooks forming the memoranda on which the journal itself was based. According to Freeman, it is the work most often read and 'stands second only to On the Origin of Species as the most often printed'. The first issue forms the third volume of The Narrative of the Voyages of H.M.S. Adventure and Beagle, edited by Captain Robert FitzRoy and published in 3 volumes with an appendix to volume II in 1839. The second issue was the first appearance of the work in its own right. The first owner of this copy, the Reverened Thomas Mainwaring Bulkeley-Owen of Tedmore Hall, Oswestry (d. 1910), became the second husband of the Welsh author, Fanny Mary Katherine Bulkeley-Owen (1845-1927), the only daughter of J.R. Ormsby-Gore. Freeman 11.
