Lot Essay

The above hand-made dishes, made of a course, iron-rich clay, are known as kawarake. They are decorated with Korin-style patterns, each with a different motif - a concept known as egawari. The notion of irregular sets was known since the fourteenth century, when it was praised by Yoshida Kenko in his essay tsurezuregusa (Essays in Idleness).

For similar sets see The Gotoh Museum, Ceramics of Kenzan (1663-1743) The Gotoh Museum 1987, (Tokyo 1987), pl.104-2, 104-3, 104-4, p.83
