Hamaguchi was born in Wakayama-ken, Japan in 1909, but lived half of his life in Paris. He has been known amongst an elite international art audience since 1957, when he won prizes for his graphics both in Tokyo and in the Sao Paulo biennale of that year.
The technique of mezzotint printing was devised more than 300 years ago and is considered the most physically demanding of all the printing processes. A messotint reverses all other printing techniques in that the artist works from dark to light; the shapes and highlights emerge from the black surface of the plate gradually, providing tonal variation that are not possible in any other method of engraving.
