Lot Essay

John Thompson was born in Oldham in 1924. He is self-taught and paints groups of figures, cloth capped, and anonymous. He is compared to better known northern artists such as Theodore Major, Harold Riley and L.S.Lowry.
A book on Johns' life and work entilted JOHN THOMPSON -"Do you like 'em then" was published and launched at a major retrospective exhibition in Manchester in March 2006.
