3 parts in 1 vol., 4° (253 x 208mm). Four full-page engravings after Meier. (Occasional light spotting, light staining to lower edge of first half of volume, some small mainly marginal holes and short tears.) Nineteenth-century cloth, re-backed preserving the original spine, black morocco label titled in gilt (covers slightly scuffed, extremities worn, label chipped). Provenance: Prince Vladimir Fedorovich Odoevskii (bookplate) -- old shelf marks.
PRINCE ODOEVSKII'S COPY of the expanded edition of Beliaev's description of the treasures of Peter the Great's 'Kunstkammer', printed at the request of Paul I. Pushkin had a copy of this work in his library. Beliaev had been the first to attempt to describe in Russian the contents of the 'Kunstkammer', including B.K. Rastrelli's 'wax figure' of Peter the Great, for which work Rastrelli made casts of Peter's face, arms and legs. The book also contains a section on the books in the Library of the Imperial Academy of Sciences. Prince V.F. Odoevskii held numerous government posts during his lifetime, wrote children's books, and was an assistant director of the Imperial Public Library and director of the Rumiantsev museum.
