Contemporary green morocco, front cover with cipher of the Empress Maria Aleksandrovna, gilt and black border, pink moiré endpapers (extremities slightly rubbed). Provenance: Maria Aleksandrovna (binding) -- 'Printed in Russia' (stamp) -- Paul M. Fekula.
EMPRESS MARIA ALEKSANDROVNA'S COPY. Second Edition. In P.A. Viazemskii's opinion, this novel was the first Russian moral novel ('roman nravov'). Its publication brought Pogarel'skii the literary recognition that his previous works had not. Fekula 5028 (this copy).
