TOLSTOI'S INTERPRETATION OF THE CHRISTIAN TEACHING, forming the third of the three religious writings composed after the watershed year of 1878. Tolstoi himself considered his various religious writings to be his most important works and termed the novels for which he was famous 'trifles' in comparison. This contemporary transcription was made only a year after the original was written; many of his work written after 1880 were banned or heavily edited by the censor and thus did not appear in print until many years later. Tolstoi's repeated and outspoken challenges of the official teachings led to his excommunication by the Holy Synod in 1901; this did not however cause Tolstoi to recant his views. Smirdin-Sokol'skii vol. 1 p.454 1193; Terras pp.476-477.
