8° (262 x 175mm). Nineteen full-page lithographs, some with tissue-guards, illustrations throughout, some lithographed, some engraved. Errata. (Occasional spotting.) Twentieth-century black half-morocco, with the original upper wrapper mounted and bound in, gilt patterned endpapers (very small chip to spine, extremities very lightly rubbed, top corner of original cover chipped and tear at fore-edge repaired).

FIRST EDITION. A history of the battalion charged with protecting the Imperial Family and guarding important posts and watches. The history begins with a chapter on the assassination of Alexander II in 1881, which was the impetus for the formation of the battalion, and includes a section on the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-1905.
