Each with a rectangular top above a pierced geometric fretwork frieze with blind fretwork angles on a punched ground, the lower edge with ribbon-wrapped flowerheads, on square legs with pierced fretwork angles, each with a depository label underneath printed 'Lanes, Truro' and inscribed in ink '46,10' and '46,11', one table with pencil inscription underneath '14/12/45'

Lot Essay

The character of these tables is in keeping with much of the furniture bought by Sir Edward Guinness, 1st Bt. and 1st Earl of Iveagh (d. 1927), for Elveden Hall, Thetford, Norfolk. Elveden was bought by the 1st Earl of Iveagh in 1894, following the death of its previous owner, the Maharajah Duleep Singh, the deposed sovereign of the Sikh nation. The majority of Elveden's contents were sold by the 3rd Earl of Iveagh, at the Christie's house sale, 21-24 May 1984. This pair of tables are similar to three tables with fretwork decoration included in the sale lots 611, 623 and 626. Tables of this kind, embellished with fretwork decoration, were produced throughout the 19th century continuing the Chippendale patterns illustrated in the Director, first published in 1754, and associated pattern books of the mid-eighteenth century.
