Lot Essay
A table of this form was formerly at Charlton Park, Kent, and possibly supplied to Sir Thomas Wilson, 6th Bt. (1726-98). It was sold by his descendent, Sir Spencer Maryon-Wilson, 11th Bt., in these Rooms, 8 May 1930 and is now in the Gerstenfeld Collection (E. Lennox-Boyd, ed., Masterpieces of English Furniture: The Gerstenfeld Collection, London, 1998, no. 19, p. 201 & pl.47 [illustration from H. A. Tipping, English Homes, Period III, vol. I, 1922, p. 385]). Another, lacking pierced gallery is at Audley End, illustrated in H. A. Tipping, English Homes, Period III, vol. II, p. 262, fig. 330.
Sir Emmanuel and Lady Kaye formed a splendid collection of 18th century English furniture, porcelain and paintings, collecting from the 1950s until the 1980s. Through their friendship with John Fowler, who provided advice and help in placing the carefully sought out pieces they bought from Partridge, Malletts, Norman Adams and Hotspur, they established a classic English country-house collection of the decorative arts at Hartley Place in Hampshire. The collection was sold in two sales at Christie's King Street on 20 September and 29 November 2001.
