Lot Essay

This large armchair is nearly identical to one sold anonymously, Christie's, London, 23 November 2006, lot 150 (£36,000). Another closely related armchair, though with inverted central section to the lower part of the splat, was sold anonymously, Christie's, London, 22 April 2004, lot 29 (£45,410). This chair design relates to a 1750's 'Slough' or 'Windsor' chair by Richard Hewett discussed in Nancy Goyne Evans 'A History and Background of English Windsor Furniture', Furniture History, 1979, pp. 24-53, pl. 84.
