Lot Essay
A pair of gilt-gesso tables, one George I, the other of later date, close in design and with similar cavetto frieze carved with shells and foliage to the present lot, was sold anonymously, Christie's, London, 1 June 2004, lot 56 (£28,680). Another similar George I gilt-gesso side table was sold by Mr and Mrs Rollason, Christie's, London, 3 July 1997, lot 182. The latter table was illustrated in G. W. Whiteman (ed.), 'Ludstone Hall, Claverley, Shropshire', The Antique Collector, London, December 1965-January 1966, p. 238, shown in situ in the Drawing-Room. Interestingly, both compararable examples have ornament covering the entire length of the legs. The present table's legs, which have had regessoing and refreshments to the gilding, may have originally had a greater amount of decoration.
