Lot Essay

A pair of similar needlework small sofas or 'love seats' was sold by The Marquess of Cholmondeley, in these Rooms, 24 November 2005, lot 40 (£42,000 including premium). The needlework on the latter pair was 18th century but not original to their frames. A pair of much larger needlework-covered sofas and a pair of broad wing armchairs, en suite, may have been supplied to the 4th Duke of Leeds (d. 1789), Hornby Castle, Yorkshire. The pair of sofas was sold by The Lord Bruntisfield, M.C., in these Rooms, 23 May 1963, lot 66 and offered anonymously, in these Rooms, 10 July 2003, lot 125. The pair of broad wing armchairs was sold anonymously, in these Rooms, 30 June 1977, lot 31A and subsequently illustrated in L. Synge, Mallett Millennium, London, 2000, pp. 100-103.
