Additional provenance for this lot:
Almost certainly William Lowther, 2nd Earl of Lonsdale (1787-1782), 14-15 Carlton House Terrace, London and by descent until 1947.
The stencilled inscription '957/C.H.T' is most probably an inventory mark for William Lowther, 2nd Earl of Lonsdale, who acquired 14-15 Carlton House Terrace in 1837. Furniture from this residence was stencilled 'CHT' with a three digit inventory number, including the George III commode by Pierre Langlois, sold by French and Company, Christie's, New York, 24 November 1998, lot 35. Property from 14-15 Carlton House Terrace was later absorbed into Lowther Castle, near Penrith, Cumberland. The contents of Lowther Castle were sold by the 5th Earl of Lonsdale, Maple & Co. house sale, 15-17 April 1947. It has not been possible to identify these tables in that sale catalogue.
