Lot Essay

It has been suggested that this picture depicts a scene from 'Romance mauresque', a poem published in Victor Hugo's Les Orientales (1829). Victor Hugo was one of the most important and influential writers of the Romantic movement in France and it was this collection of poems that first achieved his wide-spread popularity and reputation as a poet.
