Lot Essay

James Northcote studied at the Royal Academy Schools and joined Sir Joshua Reynolds as his pupil and assistant, remaining in his studio until 1776. He was elected Associate of the Royal Academy in 1786 and full Royal Academician in 1787. During the 1780s he expanded his oeuvre from portraiture to include subject pictures and mythological and history paintings.
