Two poems in Jim Morrison's hand written in blue ballpoint pen on either side of a sheet of lined paper, circa 1970, one poem entitled Bright Flags 10 lines beginning The great hiway [sic] of dawn stretching to slumber pouring out from her greedy palms a shore, to wander.., the middle verse addressing a viking, telling him that he cannot be saved, the poem ending Time has claimed you/Coming for you...; the poem on the other side of the page, untitled, 27 lines beginning the Form is a plane above the earth. A soldier bails out, leaving his entrails Fluttering, billowing, Scooped down, windy midwife wrench'd by the world from her rich belly, my metal mother, ripped cord, down & frozen. Following pilot the eye of the plane. Great Eye of Night? God on a windscreen, windscream,/wormwind trailing. (& hide among women like a toothless bird)...

Jim Morrison began writing poetry in his early teens and although he later found mythical success as lead sing for the Doors, poetry remaind his passion. In 1969 Morrisson self-published two volumes of poetry: The Lords Notes on Vision and The New Creatures...

As Danny Sugerman wrote ...Jim Morrison didn't want to be a god. Jim Morrison wanted to be a poet. Surely, no modern poet has written better of the alienation and feelings of isolation, dread, and disconnectedness than Jim Morrison...Jim was aware of this modern schism, this sense of dislocation, our angst, and in a self interview included in Wilderness: The Lost Writings of Jim Morrison as a prologue, Morrison said If my poetry aims to achieve anything. It's to deliver people from the limited ways in which they see and feel. Sugarman continues Jim's dying wish was to be taken seriously as a poet. While he was alive, his behavior blinded many of us to his words. today his life still fascinates and amazes us, and his work as a poet is finally gaining the recognition it deserves...
