Lot Essay

The present portrait reliefs formed part of the collection of the Margraves of Baden-Baden until they were sold in 1995 during a sale lasting 15 days. As members of an important German princely family, it was natural that they should have their portraits executed by one of the foremost ivory carvers of the day, Jean Cavalier, who trained in France but was mainly active in England.
