Lot Essay

This study is related to the oil painting The Woman clothed with the Sun (dated circa 1797, von Erffa & Staley, 405), now at Princeton University Art Gallery. The work was commissioned for the Revelation Chamber at Fonthill Abbey, along with a painting of A mighty Angel standeth upon the Land and upon the Sea (see lot 33).
