Lot Essay

The subject is taken from Genesis, ch. 29, 1-10.

West painted this subject twice, one in the Chrysler Museum, Norfolk, Virginia (von Erffa and Staley, 247), and the other, much closer in composition to the present drawing, is unlocated but known from engravings.
