Lot Essay

The present group of drawings span four decades of the artist's career, including some of the young artist's first exercises into watercolour; a study of the cliffs at Tintagel for one of his most important works The Cave of the Storms Nymphs, 1901 and drawings from his foreign tours.

The provenance of these drawings are notable, Poynter married Agnes MacDonald (1843-1906), her sister Louisa (1845-1925) married the industrialist Alfred Baldwin and was the mother of Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin. The others sisters were Alice (1837-1910), who married John Lockwood Kipling, and mother of Rudyard Kipling and Georgiana (1840-1920) who married Edward Burne-Jones (see lots 112-114).
