The Feodorovskaya portrayed in the centre, the side panels representing full-length images of the Imperial couple's namesake saints, Alexandra to the left and Nicholas to the right, both saints in supplication to the Mother of God, finely painted with deep colours, the wings closing to reveal the engraved figures of the archangels Gabriel and Michael, both standing on swirling clouds and bending forward, wearing liturgical garments, holding a sceptre and a globe inscribed with Christ's initials, the top decorated with cut-out opulents foliate scrolls and a Patriarchal cross
Extended: 13 x 12¾ in. (33 x 32.5 cm)

Given by Tsar Nicholas II as a gift to one of his high officials; thence by descent to the present owner

Lot Essay

The Fedorovskaya has been one of the most venerated icons in Russia. Since 1613, when Ksenia Ivanova blessed her 16-year old son, Michail Romanov, with this image during his coronation as Tsar, the Feodor Mother of God became the patroness of the Romanov Dynasty. To honour this icon, Tsar Nicolas II and his wife Alexandra Feodorovna had a private chapel built in the park of their residence of Tsarskoe Selo dedicated to her. Furthermore, it is in front of this icon that the Tercentenary of the Romanov dynasty was celebrated. This lot was most likely produced for the latter occasion.
