A RARE WHITE JADE CONJOINED CIRCULAR BOWL
QIANLONG PERIOD (1736-1795)

Finely carved in the form of two conjoined circular receptacles, supported on a conforming foot ring, the overlapping mouth rims forming an elliptical central cavity, dividing a pair of clouds-and-bat handles, each suspending a loose-ring to the side, the exterior carved in shallow relief with bats variously in flight amidst wispy clouds, the semi-translucent stone of an even tone with small areas of russet inclusions

Lot Essay

Amongst jade carvings, the form of the present lot appears to be unique although a number of conjoined ceramics found popularity in the Yongzheng and Qianlong periods. As with the ceramics, this double-bowl was probably produced as part of a number of novelty pieces that were made for the Qianlong court. Compare the spinach-green jade conjoined baluster vase in the Hartman collection, offered in this sale as lot 1542.
