the exterior painted with panels enclosing precious objects including archaistic ding and gu alternating with scenes of a scholar kneeling before a warrior with his sword raised high, a messenger before a lady reading a scroll, a scholar before an equestrian warrior and a mandarin kneeling before a ruler, the interior with a butterfly and peony spray growing amidst rockwork, the sides with alternating floral sprays of pink and pomegranate below a border with cartouches enclosing auspicious emblems reserved on a wan ground, underglaze blue lingzhi mark -- 8 9/16in. (21.7cm.) diam.
