a hanging scroll, in ink and colour on paper depicting a scholar on a wide flattened rock serenely seated in white flowing robes playing the qin on his lap, his bright blue slippers sit behind him, the figure beneath jutting rockwork and long gnarled pine branches with green foilage, surrounded on all sides by strong foaming waves, signed and with two seals -- 45½in. x 18 5/8in. (115.5cm. x 47.3cm.).

Provenance
The scroll was gifted to the husband of the present owner as a birthday present in June 1945 from J.T.Asquith on an inspection of the Sung Sing Cotton Mills which was producing cloth for the Chinese army near the Wei River. Zhang Daqian left China for Brazil in 1948.
