The watercolours were commissioned to accompany a number of catalogues including Chinese ceramics from The Catalogue of Hsiang (Xiang Yuanbian); Chinese Porcelains from the Collections of Dr. Bushell and Capt. Brinkley; Chinese Porcelains from the Iwasaki Collections (Japan); Japanese Porcelains from the Iwasaki Collection; Japanese Tea Bowls, Tea Cups, Tea Jars and Tea Pots from Collections Made by Capt. F Brinkley; and Japanese Pottery and Porcelain from Collections Made by Capt. F Brinkley.
Capt. Francis Brinkley was born in Ireland in 1841. After graduating from the Royal Military Academy he moved to Hong Kong as adjutant of Hongkong Governor General, Richard Magnell. He then moved to Japan and eventually published and became editor of the Japan Mail and foreign correspondent for the London Times. Brinkley was a keen collector of both Chinese and Japanese ceramics. Part of his collection was donated to museums, some was sold at The American Art Galleries in 1893 where the two-day sale realised US$36,000. Much of his collection was burned down in the fires following the Great Earthquake and World War II.
