Lot Essay

The present etching is the only one by Ostade that may be properly classified as a landscape. Although the origins of the composition are unclear several of Ostade's contemporaries also made drawings of anglers fishing from wooden bridges. Perhaps the most celebrated of these is Rembrandt's etching of Jan Six's bridge, which was executed two years before the present work (see lot 238 in this sale).
