Lot Essay

Despite the fact that The Rest on the Flight into Egypt was not described in the Bible, it became an extremely popular subject in European art. Rembrandt etched eight different versions, but it is perhaps the two nocturnal settings that portray the intimacy and drama of a family at flight most effectively.
