Lot Essay

This dramatic scene clearly appealed to Rembrandt who addressed it in three oils, two etchings and several pen and ink studies. The inventory of his collection at the time of his bankruptcy in 1656 also included a painting of the subject by Giorgione. This etched version, composed using strong shadows and contrasts, shows Christ and the woman at the well at the point where He announces that he is indeed the Messiah.
