Lot Essay

Le Club des Quatres was a friendly association of four painters: G. I. Krug (1908-1969), L. A. Uspensky (1902-1987), V. I. Budanova and K. A. Somov. Together they formed the Academie de Grandvilliers.
In Album no. 3, p. 10 (lot 42), there is a preparatory sketch for this menu.

In February 1925 M. G. Lukianov bought a farm in Normandy in a small village called Grandvilliers, where he lived with his friend M. Kralin. There they raised birds and rabbits. In June 1925 on his return from New York, Somov was astonished by the natural beauty of the area. In 1926 Somov bought the farm in Grandvilliers from Lukianov.
