oval box, the cover set with an enamel plaque depicting Cornelia and her Children in a classical landscape with statues, pillar and curtain background, surrounded by a band of gold and blue enamel with crescent-shaped gold paillons, the outer border decorated with opaque white enamel and trailing foliage, the sides and base with lavender-blue enamel reserves bordered with gold and royal blue enamel bands, the side reserves divided by paillons of gold urns with foliage and swags, on opaque white enamel ground

Lot Essay

The scene on the lid is after the painting by Angelica Kauffman (Swiss, 1741-1807; active England 1776-1781) in the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, depicting Cornelia, Mother of the Gracchi, Pointing to her Children as Her Treasures, of circa 1785.
