Lot Essay

The scene on the lid is after the painting by Angelica Kauffman (Swiss, 1741-1807; active England 1776-1781) in the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, depicting Cornelia, Mother of the Gracchi, Pointing to her Children as Her Treasures, of circa 1785.
